1.In what ways does your media product Use, Develop or Challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Music Video We started with planning, we had a variety of idea's for what song we could produce a music video on. We narrowed it down to either expanding on our first Video 'Radiohead - Creep' or 'Florence and The Machine - Howl' although both songs have strong lyrics of which good ideas could come from we chose to do 'Howl' the reason being was we wanted to set ourselves a new exciting challenge of which we could create a new narrative/storyboard and on top of that we liked the 'Indie'Alternative' genre. Before we began the long process of completing a storyboard for this video we watched other media video's on 'Youtube' this enabled us to get a great insight to what the audience would expect from the artist we chose and the genre. There hadn't been a video for Howl produced by the artist so we took idea's from her other video's and video's of similar genre. We took conventions from them and tried to incorporate as many as we could into our own product, we mostly went for what we thought would target the audience. The conventions we used that were similar to our artist and that would conform and develop idea's are Location and Style, For example we found most of her video's were outside, she also has a specific look (pale skin and unique clothes) we captured a similar look with our own artist and chose a location based outside. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EIeUlvHAiM This Video in particular was the one we focused on, it has a huge link with our video with the whole idea its based outdoors, it has a strange storyline and her style stands out we tried to develop this idea into our own. Our video in many ways uses and develops conventions of real media products however we also challenge it with the idea that our video has that visual and lyrical link. This meaning we produced a storyline based on the lyrics of the song, it also sets a completely different mood from other Florence video's. Florence videos are usually quite fantasy based and bright where as ours is the opposite, the lighting's different which makes it look darker this gives the idea that the video is going to be quite dark and deep. We felt by challenging the convention we could make a piece with more meaning to the audience, something that was surreal but also captured true feelings.
Slide 1 - In this slide we picked out a few things within our video that 'Conforms, Develops and Challenges real media products. Ancillary task
Slide 2 -When doing this slide we looked at all three of our Ancillary tasks, we selected one piece of all of our work and looked at whether it 'Conformed, Developed or Challenged' real media conventions. We thought Ella's advert conformed because it has minimal text like Florence and The Machines advert and it uses the same image as album which links it. We chose my back cover from my digipak to compare to the original back cover. It develops Ideas from the original in the same way I have a similar layout, its just a plain image that has a links with the cover image, they're both basic back covers. When looking at my ancillary task I would say I have Conformed, Developed and Challenged Real media conventions. I've developed conventions from the real product(album) and used certain things to show similarities for example with my digipak I have used a layout in which is a lot like the real thing, I also took the idea to have the artist included on the album cover but to have all the other pages basic and this is what you see when looking at the original thing. When producing my digipak as well as Developing to real media products I conformed to the conventions by looking at other media products particularly Florence and The Machine products, I felt after examining the artist and looking at her style I wanted to create an image what represented our artist to the audience but also represented Florence. I think I done a good job producing a cover picture in which conforms to the idea of the real media product. I also challenge real media conventions for example if you look at adverts advertising products from my artist they look a to the outcome of mine. When looking at the advert in the slide above you can see her image links exactly with her album image where as I thought I would challenge it and use a different image for my advert. I kept somethings similar throughout the digipak and advert as I wanted them to link in some ways or another. 2.How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Slide 3 - with this slide we added basic words Genre, Representation, Continuity and Target audience. They have greater depth to them and when explained show specifically why and how our group and individual work is effective. When looking at both the main product and my ancillary tasks you can see what style genre it is (Indie/alternative) not only have we shown it in the video through representation and style of the artist but I've shown it in the colour scheme of my ancillary task and also by using the same representation in images of the artist, this is effective because it will appeal to the target audience. The representation of the artist is how the artist wants to be shown to its audience, after exploring the real artist we produced our own version of the artist. They have lots of similarities and I feel this is effective and works with target audience. Target audience is one of the main keys to the product being effective, meaning if you don't produce work thats aimed to your specific audience then you have to ask yourself who's it going to appeal to. After watching the video and looking at my digipak and advert I produced I feel I have used continuity throughout, you can tell everything is linked due to artist being recognisable. The artist is represented the same throughout all my work as well as the video and the colour scheme and texts are all very similar if not the same. All in all I feel my main task and ancillary task worked out to be very effective As we wanted to produce a video with meaning and darkness to it and we done that exact thing. I kept continuity throughout my ancillary texts which helps the audience to recognise the artist from the video and what type of artist she is. 3.What have you learnt from audience feedback?
Slide 4 - We felt we needed a slide to show quotes from the sorts of feedback we received, we noticed most feedback was very similar and most criticisms came down to lighting and length of some shots.
Slide 5 - We made a slide including words which were key area's of improvements needed: Weather, Editing, Filming, Effects, Time management and Lighting. After looking at audience feedback I noticed most problems began with time limit, for example although we was given a great deal of time to plan, film and edit we found planning was time consuming and when filming we had problems such as weather. On some days the weather conditions were too cold or too wet which wasn't fair conditions to make people work outside in, on top of that we got into situations where it got too dark quickly and filming was very difficult, However when being in that circumstance we gained a few positive accidental shots. Once filming everything we went onto editing and we had many problems with editing. Problems such as getting the syncing perfectly in time, this took up a great amount of our time. We had tricky transitions to fit in and we found some shots went on for too long and were too dark however it was too late and time had run out to do anything about it. The majority of our feedback said similar things, everyone enjoyed the video but they felt some shots were too dark which made it hard to see and some shots needed shorter cuts. We found the feedback was very helpful and I've learnt that you can't always rely on weather conditions being ideal, therefore have a back up plan e.g a location which offers more shelter. Keeping the weather in mind and filming things a number of times from a variety of angles is necessary next time to ensure you have more than enough when it comes to editing another thing to make it more effective would be adding more effects and transitions. 4.How did you use media Technologies in the Construction, Research, Planning and Evaluation stages?
Slide 6 - In this slide we made spider diagrams of technologies we used around each process we went through. Throughout the process of the Planning,Researching, Constructing and Evaluation of my main product and ancillary task many media technologies were used. Planning - When planning my group began with using the internet to research and communicate on social network groups(e.g facebook). We also used our phones to text one another and a digital camera to take photographs of locations which appealed to us and gave us idea's. Researching - This was the first step into the task, I began with using google and this was to research artists/bands, Genre's and Lyrics. From there I went onto Youtube so I could watch video's and gain idea's for my own, this allowed me to see what effects and idea's were good and not so good. When choosing the artist/band I then went onto their official site and explored their album(s) on HMV online. Construction - The construction process used a range of technologies starting with the digital video camera/camera to take photographs of the process of filming, props and characters and to film our video. Our next step went onto uploading our clips to iMovieHD which was the program we used to edit our video and Itunes to access the album and get the song off of and lastly I used photoshop for the editing and creation of my digipak/advert. Evaluation - The evaluation included me using 'blogger' to show what I've done step by step. Google and Youtube to get links to Video's and images helping us to analyse our main product and my ancillary tasks. Digital camera to take photographs of things beneficial to me and my work. To sum it up we used powerpoint to produce an evaluation of our whole piece to present and sum up the project. Overall you can see when tackling the task of producing a music video and ancillary texts man media technologies were used, without them we may not have been able to produce the video at the standard it is and my digipak and advert could have been a disaster.
